More About The Coffee
Masha Coffee Washing Station, built in 1989, is named after the sub-hill on which it stands. Interestingly, the area is better known for its cattle than its coffee, with the name "Masha" coming from the Kirundi word “amasho,” meaning "herds of cattle." The station supports over 1,000 small-scale farmers who rely on coffee as a cash crop, with many also growing food crops to support their families.
In Burundi, most coffee trees are of the Red Bourbon variety. However, many are over 50 years old, and due to small farm sizes, farmers struggle to replace aging trees. To assist, Greenco purchases seeds from the Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Burundi (ISABU), grows them in nurseries, and sells the seedlings at a low cost. Farmers also receive organic fertiliser made from composted coffee pulp. On average, each farmer has around 250 coffee trees, which yield roughly 200–300 kilos of cherries per year.
"This coffee was really popular on the cupping table because it had a lovely sweetness without anything overpowering it. It’s well-balanced, easy to drink, and we believe everyone will really enjoy it." - Mike, QA and small batch roaster.
